Working on the section gang was hard strenuous work. The men had mostly hand tools, one power tool, surely an acetylene torch and a foreman, standing front and center, who could hold his own with the best of them.
While this is not a photograph of a group of railfans you can still imagine the sights they saw everyday working their section around Columbus Union Station.
The section cars are still labeled CCC&STL (Cleveland Cincinnati Chicago & St. Louis Railway). When this photo was taken in 1937 this was now the New York Central Railroad, but still nicknamed the “Big Four”.
