Big Four Section Gang No. 4 - 1937

Photo of the Month - February 2017

The Big Four section gang is in front of their Dennison Avenue section house (behind the camera). The buildings in the background are facing Spruce Street. The camera is looking northeast toward Goodale Park. Photo from the Alex Campbell Collection.

Working on the section gang was hard strenuous work. The men had mostly hand tools, one power tool, surely an acetylene torch and a foreman, standing front and center, who could hold his own with the best of them.

While this is not a photograph of a group of railfans you can still imagine the sights they saw everyday working their section around Columbus Union Station.

The section cars are still labeled CCC&STL (Cleveland Cincinnati Chicago & St. Louis Railway). When this photo was taken in 1937 this was now the New York Central Railroad, but still nicknamed the “Big Four”.

The camera is pointed west across Dennison Avenue toward the Big Four section house. While this is the Big Four main line the B&O also used it from GN Tower to Columbus Union Station. The track curving toward the camera leads into the Big Four Yard that was a locomotive servicing facility and coach yard. The Buckeye Awning building also appears in the first photo.
